Collection: Wicker Wings

MODERN WICKER BAGS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO A BETTER WORLD AS WELL AS YOUR WARDROBE

We're a family business on a mission to give female artisans financial independence through our handmade, sustainable wicker bags. Wicker Wings started as a brother and sister duo, Belinda and James, after finding out that our Māma (Grandma) made handwoven baskets in her village in China in hope for a better life. Fast forward 30 years and this is still the case in rural parts of Asia today. So we created Wicker Wings as a way of shining light on our grandmother’s past and supporting the current generation of these incredible female artisans.

We want to help current female weavers so that they can have the same financial independence our Māma had. You aren't just carrying a wicker bag; you're carrying someone's story, sustaining demand for these jobs, and forming part of a woman's journey. We're committed to creating beautifully handmade handbags that are kind to the planet, high quality, and elevate this handicraft. We hope you can join us in our journey.

SUSTAINABILITY & SUPPLY CHAIN

90% of our weavers are female. Each story is different, but they all share the same mission. Most of our weavers either do not have enough money for higher education, have children to look after, or are divorced or widowed, but they all share one common job: wicker weaving. Our baskets help these female artisans.

Wicker Wings only use natural rattan. Rattan is a naturally renewable plant and is one of the most sustainable materials on Earth. Indonesia, where our baskets are hand-made, has a tropical climate that allows rattan to grow in the highest quality and most sustainable conditions. Harvesting is done by hand and the tip of the vine is then re-planted at the base of its tree ready to repeat the process — our sustainable best friend.

90% of the world uses chrome-tanned leather and only 10% uses our vegetable-tanned leather. Chrome-tanned leather is the cheaper, quicker, and more mass-produced toxic form of leather. Our leather is more sustainable and less harmful to the environment as it is produced using natural materials such as bark and trees. The leather used is sourced from the same tanneries as some of the most renowned leather-makers in the world.

Our factory and design studio is all under one roof. Once the basket is woven in Indonesia, it is then sent to our factory in England where we combine the highest-quality Italian vegetable-tanned leather with carefully chosen sustainable materials.
